But this discussion points out the urgent need for principia. How could it be, we could ask, that someone could seriously assert that the natural is able to account for itself? There is no evidence for such a claim, and it is far from intuitive to think so. It’s as if Oppy finds himself at the shore of a wide and deep lake and assumes to himself the burden of asserting that there is no such thing as rain. The lake must be able to account for itself; whether it is necessary or contingent, it must be self-contained. With nose to the grindstone and eyes never looking up, he commits himself to a lifetime of studying this self-contained and self-explanatory lake. The problem is that whenever it rains, he has to find a way, against all evidence and rationality, to refer the rainwater’s origin to the lake itself.

Christianity is not a philosophy. It cannot be adequately named and gamed using philosophical tools. Instead, it is that which breathes life into true philosophy, birthing it and providing for its flourishing. God’s good gifts, of course, including Oppy’s considerable brilliance, can be enjoyed by all, even by those who deny him. Like the Prodigal Son, he can attempt to run from God, but it is impossible to escape him. A true and proper philosophy requires a personal foundation of the triune God who has spoken. Such principia are not accessed and agreed upon ultimately by way of philosophical discussion and argument but, for all four of us, can only be accessed by way of true repentance and trust in Christ. Once accessed in that way, philosophy finds its only real home. In that home, it can properly and meaningfully grow into a mature, healthy adult rather than remaining a thin, anemic orphan, perpetually meandering about with nowhere to lay its head.
